Essays by Nicola Cotton and Mark Hutchinson.

Ugliness is disturbing. Ugliness is provocative. Ugliness makes us feel sick. But what is ugliness? Why does it produce these effects? What is its significance? Questions such as these led us back to Nausea, the philosophical novel by Jean-Paul Sartre written in 1938. This exploration of the nature of ugliness in Sartre’s novel was in turn inspired by a series of lectures on ‘The Ugly’ given by Mark Cousins at the Architectural Association in London 1994-5.
